Background


In December 1989, forces of the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) led by Charles Taylor launched an uprising against the Liberian government from Côte d'Ivoire. ECOWAS sent peacekeeping forces to Liberia (ECOMOG) in August 1990. A ceasefire accord was signed in Bamako, Mali in November 1990.
