Background


Following 15 years of low-level conflict in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, violence erupted in 2003 when the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) engaged in military conflict with the Government of Sudan and the Janjaweed militia, accusing them of systematically oppressing non-Arab Sudanese.
